Summer Is Here: How We’re Refreshing Our Home (and Staying Ready for Hurricane Season)
It’s our first summer in the new house, and I’ve been leaning into all the little ways that make our space feel lighter, brighter, and more seasonal. Florida summers bring so much sunshine and outdoor time—but they also come with that extra layer of real-life prep (hello, hurricane season).
In today’s post, I’m sharing the simple swaps we’re making inside, our favorite new bedding for hot summer nights, the home trends I’m loving this season, and how we’re staying prepared for anything that might roll in from the Gulf.
Breezy Bedding: Our Summer Sleep Setup
This is our first full summer in the new house, and one of the first spaces we focused on refreshing was our bedroom. We swapped out our old sheets for Brooklinen’s Classic Percale set, and they’ve been a game changer for Florida nights. They’re crisp, breathable, and cool to the touch—which makes all the difference in this heat and humidity.
Our bed is styled pretty simply: white bedding, layered with a moss green waffle-knit throw, and a vintage-inspired bolster pillow that adds a bit of warmth and personality. We kept the palette calm and neutral, with lots of texture doing the heavy lifting.
The room is still a work in progress—we want to replace the nightstands with something that offers more concealed storage, add an area rug for softness and warmth, and find a bench for the end of the bed to (hopefully) encourage the dogs to stop claiming our pillows every night. 😅
If you’re looking to refresh your bedroom without a full redesign, I can’t recommend starting with cool, high-quality bedding enough.

Summer Home Trends to Try
Every summer brings a fresh wave of inspiration into our homes, and this season is shaping up to be equal parts breezy and bold. Whether you’re layering in natural textures or leaning into statement silhouettes, 2024’s summer trends are all about personality, play, and a connection to the outdoors. Here are a few favorites we’re seeing pop up (and loving ourselves!):
Sculptural Lighting. Think wood bases, ceramic shapes, and soft white shades. Lighting is no longer just functional — it’s becoming a design moment. Look for pieces that bring texture and dimension while staying neutral and relaxed.
Playful Glassware. We’re seeing a rise in glass pieces that feel whimsical and artistic — from hand-blown cups to cheeky fish-in-glass styles. These little moments of personality are perfect for summer entertaining or open shelving.
Woven Details. Rattan, seagrass, and natural fiber accents (like scalloped-edge trays) are still going strong. They add warmth, subtle texture, and that breezy “just came from the coast” energy to any room.
Classic Stripes. Whether it’s on a cube ottoman or a coastal pillow, stripes — especially in muted or monochrome palettes — are having a moment again. This trend bridges timeless prep with a relaxed summer twist.
Coastal Art. Ocean-inspired prints and photography are trending, particularly large-scale framed art that brings a calm, expansive feel to the home. It’s an easy way to infuse a bit of the shoreline wherever you are.
Soft Neutrals & Layered Textiles. Summer doesn’t mean you have to go all-white. This season’s palette leans into creamy neutrals, flax linen, soft greys, and layered natural tones that make your bedroom or living space feel calm, not cold.
The beauty of these trends is that they’re not just about looks — they’re about how your home feels in the summer. Light, effortless, and a little more fun.
Florida Reality Check: Hurricane Season Prep
With all the sunshine and time spent outdoors, it’s easy to get swept up in the magic of Florida summers—but with that also comes the start of hurricane season. It’s not the most glamorous topic, but it is an essential one if you call Florida home.
Each year, we keep a dedicated hurricane supply box stocked with the basics. It lives in the same spot year to year, but I always recommend checking it at the start of summer—stores get picked over quickly as soon as a storm is announced, and it feels good to know you’re ready ahead of time.
This year, we upgraded our setup with a crank radio so we can stay updated on weather alerts and local news even if the power or cell service goes out. Our plan shifts slightly depending on the year, but we always know our evacuation and flood zone info, review our insurance, and keep printed copies of any important documents on hand.
We also prep for the dogs—keeping an extra bag of food and a few doses of anxiety meds makes a big difference for our mini Aussie when storms roll in.
If you’re building or updating your own hurricane box this year, here’s a quick list of what to include:
✅ Hurricane Supply Box Checklist:
Flashlights and extra batteries
Battery-powered or crank radio
Backup power banks for phones
First aid kit
Bottled water (enough for 3+ days)
Non-perishable food and snacks
Extra dog food and meds
Copies of important documents (insurance, IDs)
Manual can opener
Garbage bags and moist towelettes
Basic hygiene items
Emergency cash
Any necessary medications (human + pet)
My honest take? Storms are scary, but they don’t have to catch you off guard. Prep early, stay calm, and always do what makes you feel safe.
